Teens get in on The Secret
Oh dear.
Simon Pulse is publishing a teen edition of Rhonda Byrne’s self-help bestseller The Secret this fall. According to the publisher, the new book, called The Secret to Teen Power, will show “how teens can transform their own lives and live their dreams, by understanding and using the power they have in their hands.”
I wonder if the teen edition will be just as popular as the original. Will teens even take a book like this seriously? It sounds to me like a book a desperate parent might try to foist on their troubled adolescent.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the power of positive thinking, but I get the feeling this kind of “self-help” has little basis in reality. I probably wouldn’t be comfortable recommending this to a teen…unless, perhaps, they were genuinely curious about what The Secret is all about.
Needless to say, there’s been some interesting reactions to this news posted in the blogosphere. I really like the fbomb‘s take on the matter.
