It’s O.K. to be Y.A.
One morning in the dining room, another writer asked who was publishing my book; I told her that it was Random House, and that it was being published as young adult.
“Oh, God,” she said. “That’s such a shame.”
I couldn’t get her words out of my head. I spent a lot of time worrying about whether my book would be taken seriously.
What’s wrong with YA? What makes YA, YA? Can a YA book successfully crossover to adult? Is it all just marketing? These are just some of the questions author Margo Rabb explores in an essay she published in the New York Times recently. There are some great quotes from the likes of Sherman Alexie, Meg Rossoff, Mark Haddon and James Patterson.
